Carpe Diem! Welcome to A Room of My Own...

My Life...in a nutshell

Hello, here I am still residing on the beautiful central California coast while teaching at a local high school for my third year. I teach two classes of creative writing to a talented group of juniors and seniors in addition to three regular English classes. In my "other life" I am a writer, poet and observer of life. My goal in 1999 is to enjoy the magic that each day has to offer...And to keep writing what I see and know! Below you will find two of my recent poetic offerings from observations of special sites around Santa Cruz County. Enjoy!
--Christi Crutchfield

Inferno (Fall Creek, Santa Cruz, CA)
There is a memory of heat...
The shouts of men--
faces blackened and scorched.

We sit on the mossy
vault of bricks;
coarse limestone crumbling
through our fingers
staining our hands ivory.

Above
the trees shudder
anointing us
with a wet cloak of leaves...
this dampening of memory;
this smoldering of heat.

Bird-Stillness (Mt. Madonna, Watsonville, CA)
In the bird-stillness
I hear echoes
of the cattle king's
scattered offspring.

Inside this arena of redwoods,
spirits chase across
circular foundations;
crawl down
split concrete stairs.

Inside this recollection of walls
the scent of untamed thyme
rises and falls;
rises and falls
over abandoned gardens
in the bird-stillness.
